I Know One Thing That Is Holding Your Law Firm Back

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers I Know One Thing that is Holding Your Law Firm Back   Many law firms, practice groups/offices and lawyers remind me of a quote from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. Which road shall I take? She asked. His response was a question: Where do you want to go? I don’t know, Alice answered. Then, said the cat, it doesn’t matter. While most of our clients seem to have no trouble articulating where they want to go, many law firms and practice groups/offices are like Alice. I believe it is because they have not decided and tried to get a consensus among the lawyers on what they want to be and become. Self reflection in an organization can be a painful experience. Like many large law firms, my old firm paid an outside consulting firm big money to advise the firm on what it should become. After receiving the advice, firm leaders conducted “town hall” meetings and were surprised to learn that the vast majority of partners didn’t want to implement any part of the consulting firm’s suggestions. Our partners could not agree on what they wanted the firm to become, but they could agree it was not what the consulting firm suggested, What do the lawyers in your firm want to the firm to be? Is there a consensus? Do you have a plan to get there? If you have a plan, are you executing on the plan, or is it like the 2001 strategic plan my old firm “rolled out” at our partner’s retreat and rolled back up as soon as we got back to Dallas? I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Tips For Writing A Professional Resume

Tips For Writing A Professional ResumeMany employers in the United States of America expect professional resume writing to be professional. This means that if you want to write a resume for someone with a specific field of expertise you should use only the most common words when describing your career. It is not uncommon for these resumes to be rejected for numerous reasons.First, it is possible that your career education will be too specialized. If this is the case with you, you should think about what specific college or university you attended. If the school is too specialized, you should choose a career field that does not have as many areas of specialization. This will allow you to fit into that specific field without making it too hard for the employer to know what to do with your resume.Second, if you went to a very specific university, you should also consider what university's curriculum you studied in. This may be a reason your resume was rejected in the past. Employers wil l often go for a specific field of specialization over another, especially if the other one is going to take much longer to get you into the job. It is easier to write a resume for someone who is already at the right job, not so easy to hire someone else. Finally, if you are applying for a position in a specific career field, you should choose your career field carefully. It is best to describe what you did in that particular career field before you went to school there. It will help you be clear about what you did in your school. Make sure you mention all of your jobs and you could even include a link to your website or LinkedIn profile if you have one. There are many different ways to make your resume professional. The most important thing is to avoid filling it up with the same job titles you have worked at for years. If you already have used these titles, your employer is less likely to see this as an accident on your part and they will be less likely to see you as professional. A simple 'I have worked at...' or 'I have worked for...' would suffice. It is also important to use your area of specialization. This makes your resume more professional. Your resume will show that you are using your professional skills in a specific area so it will make it easier for an employer to recognize your skills and offer you a job. When you are looking for tips for writing a professional resume, you should also be aware of how long it can take to complete a resume. It is probably easier to write a resume that is shorter, but if you need a lengthier one you should look into a service to help you. You will also want to make sure that your resume is not too technical so that it will be easy for your resume to be read by a computer.Resumes should be professional and this means writing something that an employer would be happy to see and want to consider hiring. Dear Santa Bring The Gift of Growth

Dear Santa Bring The Gift of Growth Be Patient-The Answers Will Come We are finishing out the final days of 2013, which makes it a perfect time for reflecting on the past and present to open ourselves for personal and professional growth in the coming year.   For each one of us, every day is marked with choices that make up the overall stories of our lives.   There are small choices that shape our days and months, and then, there are significant choices that shape our years.   These entire choices culminate into stories that make up the chapters in our book of life.   If you are at a place in life where there seems to be a bishop or knight attempting to block your progress,  then take the time for self-reflection to realign mentally and spiritually.   It is within these reflecting moments that you will be able to find the answers to what is blocking your growth personally or professionally. Be Patient-The Answers Will Come One of the first times I tried to sit and reflect was at the age of seven years old.   My parents would send myself and three sisters to a church camp in the summer for a week.   The year was 1978 when there were lots of trees, no air or road traffic, simply you and nature.   They told us to spread out and select a spot that would invite moments alone to think and write.   We were told to sit there for 20 minutes.   What!?   The week was filled with daily activities, but each morning we had to sit for reflection time.   I spent the 20 minutes observing nature and people. On the last day, a cricket came out from behind the brick wall and began chirping.    I listened to the little cricket singing its heart out and felt a sense of peace.   As I listened to the little cricket chirping, I placed pencil to paper and within those moments sparked a passion for writing.   I wrote about how much fun it was to come to the camp and meet all the teachers and kids.  I wrote about the hike to the falls, the making of leather bracelets, the singing in the chapel, the competition races, and the love found in my family and faith.   At the end of the writing is a small drawing of the cricket and myself.  Each year my sisters and I returned to the camp, I added a new chapter every year to the reflection journal that now rest within a keepsake box. Reflection#1 Nature provides an incredible place to step away from your daily rhythms in order to listen for the answers to the challenges you are facing in your personal and professional life.  You have a co-worker, boss, client, etc. blocking your progress, step out into nature for some quiet reflection time to figure out the steps to take for growth in each of these relationships.   Or, to find out if it is time for you to step away from those relationships and open a new chapter with new relationships in your book of life. When Opportunity Knocks-Open the Freaking Door!! Have you ever studied the power of the subconscious mind?  One of the things that blocks us from personal and professional growth are these tapes that play from our childhood over and over again keeping us from moving forward in life.   When I was 8 years old, my childhood best friend died of a rare disease known as rye syndrome.   People in the 70’s did not speak of emotions and   I can remember feeling extremely guilty for still being alive.   But, during this time period, you tucked stuff into the subconscious and marched on in life.   Years later, at the age of 28, I was sitting in my boss’s office being offered a promotion to oversee the business centers administrative team members.   Without hesitation, I turned the offer down.   Why?!   Because these deep-seeded subconscious thoughts lie dormant until something triggers the tapes to play and cause us to react before we even know what we are doing. My subconscious screamed out, “how dare you, she is dead, you do not deserve a promotion!”   Opportunity knocked at the door and I slammed the door shut.   Needless to say, I went back to my faith with a significant amount of reflection time in order to ensure this would never happen again.   Those young years at a church camp had served me well with teaching the importance of personal reflection in order to stay on the right path and make the right choices in life.   A few months later opportunity knocked again, I bolted from my seat screaming absolutely YES!   Underneath the subconscious, I told myself, “She would never want you to stop living, if anything; she would want you to cease every opportunity and live for both of you.”   That is exactly what I do every day of my life and encourage you to do the same in every situation that will bring growth into your life. Reflection #2 All of us have these tapes in our subconscious that cause us to react to life challenges negatively and positively.   If you are not moving forward in your career or personal life, pull out a piece of paper and start writing.   It takes time for answers to come to the surface in your writings.   But, they will come to the surface and provide the answers to lead you on the right path. Personal and Professional Growth:  Change the Soil and Add Water Whatever your profession in life, whatever your situation in life, whatever your struggles in life, wherever you are in life, change the soil and simply add water.   What I mean by this is if you are being blocked by a bishop or knight; change your attitude, position, outlook, strategy, etc. and align with your personal faith, humble yourself to receive enlightenment, be agreeable, or do anything different than you are currently doing in order to move you back on the right path to fulfill the chapters of your book of life. Reflection#3 Dear Santa, Please bring the answers to whoever is reading this that is currently on the wrong path, on the right path and needing answers to stay on the path, or simply needing someone to send Karma their way to bring growth in their personal or professional lives. Bring them new soil and fresh water to grow a new seedling in the next chapter in their book of life.

Customer Case Study Leah Noble - When I Grow Up Um, do you realize that Ive instructed several ladies since I began offering dream profession direction in 2008? Also, that these ladies are freakin heroes, leaving soul-sucking employments and venturing to the far corners of the planet and propelling inventive, grown-up organizations and basically accomplishing work that accommodates their way of life objectives? Well ya do now and youll hear their accounts firsthand in my Client Case Studies series! Leah Noble was a piece of a years ago Its Business Time program, where she found and propelled her structure business. The best! For what reason did you choose to select in Its Business Time? I chose to apply in light of the fact that I couldnt NOT have any significant bearing. That sounds emotional, I know, yet it was increasingly similar to, despite the fact that I didnt have the cash, I felt an enormous draw towards the course, and towards Michelle and her sly accomplice Tiffany Han. I read both their online journals insatiably, I tuned in to both their digital recordings, I simply cherished them both. So when they were advancing the course, I would get energized, I would take a gander at the application, begin rounding it out, at that point go Nahhh this is senseless, I dont even have the cash! furthermore, stop. At that point, I presented a connection on the seminar on my Facebook channel and flippantly inquired as to whether anybody needed to support me to take it. What's more, that is the means by which my crowdfunding effort was conceived, which is the manner by which I wound up finding the cash. Be that as it may, other than that pull that would not be disregarded, the explanation I chose to apply for Its Business Time was on the grounds that it really felt like it WAS Business Time, in my life. I had worked an assortment of occupations throughout my life up until now, yet nothing felt like a vocation. What's more, I had done some independent structure work while I was in school, yet felt like I was simply feeling my way in obscurity towards a business I needed direction. I needed light to show me the way. What's more, I had all out certainty that Michelle and Tiffany would give that light! What were you accomplishing work-wise when we begun the program? I was and still am working with a non-benefit association that furnishes day programming to grown-ups with scholarly inabilities. This implies paid work like preparing or printing, yet in addition life upgrade administrations. I do a wide assortment of things here: Im a prepared visual creator so I configuration pieces for the associations internet based life page, just as banners and different materials. Be that as it may, I likewise give alleviation to the staff of different offices, for example, the pastry kitchen, and I do look into, and furthermore run a few expressions programs. What was your greatest takeaway from our work together? That its actually all conceivable and that arrangements are not highly contrasting. I generally thought my profession must be either/or EITHER the normal everyday employment OR the imaginative vocation. Presently Im progressively empathetic with myself, increasingly adaptable. Beneficial things set aside effort to assemble, however its absolutely conceivable to construct something to be thankful for! What's more, I love Michelles idea of an extension work that thought that you can work a vocation while youre building your customer base or range of abilities or whatever you have to do to dispatch your inventive profession. That truly changed the manner in which I take a gander at my j-o-b. What might you tell somebody now that was from your point of view when we originally begun working together? Whats your best tip to permit them to get by doing what they love? Uncertainty will come. All the you got this!s on the planet wont keep that under control. That is OK. You may want to surrender or that its not all meeting up rapidly enough. Once more, that is OK. Be that as it may, dont surrender. Regardless of whether your advancement is small every day, despite everything gain a minuscule piece of ground. I guarantee you it will be justified, despite all the trouble. It will include, gradually, and most likely. It will erode at the uncertainty. The other thing is: be consistent with what your identity is. I know, I know, this is the most buzzword comment, as, ever. Yet, when youre in the weeds, and when you feel confounded or uncomfortable with something you believe you SHOULD do in light of the fact that every other person is doing it, however you truly dont need to that is the best and furthermore the hardest chance to be consistent with yourself. Ive took in its additionally the time its the most justified, despite all the trouble. Whats not too far off for your business? At the present time my business is little, while Im working my normal everyday employment, so I take on a predetermined number of tasks and customers. Im in reality despite everything taking a shot at ventures that individuals paid for when they upheld my crowdfunding effort a year prior! Yet, those will be done soon and afterward Ill have the option to take on some new customers. Im additionally moderate blogging really composing and attracting a sketchbook all month, and afterward presenting it on my blog toward the finish of every month. Keep Recognition From Creating Entitled Employees

Shield Recognition From Creating Entitled Employees Shield Recognition From Creating Entitled Employees What makes the prizes and acknowledgment you offer workers vital and not a privilege or desire for the representatives? The component of shock is huge for compelling prizes and acknowledgment that abstain from making entitled workers. So are four extra conditions on the grounds that regularly you will need to abstain from making entitled representatives who no longer value the exertion or cost you put resources into worker acknowledgment. A drawn out representative in a little assembling organization is an ideal case of the component of shock. He commented upon out of the blue accepting a warm lunch sack with the organization logo, that he had been genuinely amazed by the acknowledgment. (He and different representatives who had conquered an immense blizzard to come to work were said thanks to with lunch packs two or three weeks after the tempest.) He said it was the main acknowledgment he had ever gotten that was absolutely unforeseen. He said the suddenness of the blessing had uplifted the incentive to him and he utilizes the lunch box each day. This is a worker who consistently gets participation acknowledgment, and rushes to step up to any test for which there is a guaranteed reward. Subsequently, he as a rule comprehends what compensation to expect and when he will get the prize. The Power of Rewards that Surprise Employees Extemporaneous prizes and acknowledgment work to further your potential benefit. Expected prizes can become seen as privileges, and all things considered, lose their capacity to remunerate and perceive. They become the desire for the entitled representatives who get them. A privilege is any prize or acknowledgment that is normal. When the prize is a normal occasion or routinely gave acknowledgment, it turns out to be a greater amount of a desire or privilege, and to a lesser extent a prize. For instance, a tech manager gives lunch to representatives each Friday. The objectives of the lunch were representative acknowledgment and group building on the grounds that the lunch brought individuals from different offices together in one space. Since it is a normal acknowledgment, it isn't propelling. In any case, another sign that acknowledgment has become a qualification is whether individuals would grumble in the event that they lost it. On account of the Friday snacks, representatives view them as an advantage that accompanies working for the organization. No lunch? Representative grumblings would be long and uproarious. The lunch adds to the general condition of esteeming workers that the organization is focused on giving, and the lunch is likewise effective for group building. Be that as it may, it isn't seen as fulfilling or perceiving and would be seen as an advantage misfortune if the snacks were stopped. Give Recognition to Strengthen Your Team Truth be told, in another organization, the possibility of a week after week lunch for representatives was again seen as a chance to fortify an effectively close group. The desire was expressed that the organization would give Friday lunch as an approach to assemble a firm group over the organization. Further, the representatives were relied upon to have together in the break room to satisfy this reason. After some time, a few of the administrators revealing workers had chosen not to go to their ordinary Friday group building lunch get-together. For half a month, they halted into the break room, got their snacks, and returned to their work areas not under any condition the goal of the snacks. The business helped them to remember the reason for the snacks. The representatives at that point went to the Friday lunch for the following couple of weeks. In any case, following half a month had passed, they hit their boss with an unforeseen inquiry. They had avoided the Friday lunch in the organization lounge by and by however they had taken an interest in a group building movement. This time they had gone out to eat at a neighborhood café as a gathering. They were mentioning repayment for the lunch they had bought uptown all alone outside of the organization lunch. Amazing? This is a case of worker qualification conveyed as far as possible. At times, in Employee Recognition, Its Okay to Create Entitled Employees Now and then, its alright that worker recognition creates entitled representatives. In the first companys snacks, referenced over, the worker great will and group building exceed the way that the lunch is presently a normal organization advantage. In yearly organization representative life span grants, as a subsequent model, privilege is normal. Youll need to settle dependent upon the situation. For effective worker prizes and acknowledgment, youll need a decent blend of expected and unforeseen rewards and grants. 4 Ways to Avoid Creating Entitled Employees Be that as it may, in the event that it is essential to you to shield a specific worker acknowledgment from turning into a representative qualification, youll need to follow these rules. Convey the acknowledgment suddenly and not generally around the same time or simultaneously. The unexpected factor will wow your employees.Provide acknowledgment for different commitments. Differ the activities that get acknowledgment and consistently educate the worker regarding precisely why the person got acknowledgment. (Depict the activities that justified your recognition.)Vary the arrangement of the acknowledgment. On the off chance that each worker gets a card and plant for their birthday, youve made a qualification. You won't receive the reward that you would with an astutely picked blessing; you will find out about it in the event that you miss a representative in any way, shape or form. Let acknowledgment originate from an assortment of individuals. The manager isn't generally the proper individual to give acknowledgment. Consider engaging colleagues, collaborators, the president, announcing staff, HR, and a representative acknowledgment council to perceive workers. Youll advantage from the various individuals making prize and acknowledgment openings. The watchwords in shielding worker acknowledgment from turning out to be representative qualification are differed, startling, and amazing. Gauge every worker acknowledgment action that you consider against these three elements when you need to shield acknowledgment from making entitled representatives.

How One Man Found Happiness After Being Fired

How One Man Found Happiness After Being Fired Alex Korchinski got firedâ€"and it was the best thing that ever happened to him. Of course he wasn’t all that happy in the beginning, but with hindsight, he came to see that it wasn’t entirely without its benefits. Alex first told his story on his website, alexgivesup.com, and later it was reprinted in The Huffington Post. So, how did it happen? The company Alex worked for needed a Director of Growth. In an ironic twist of fate, Alex helped grow the company to the point where it no longer needed him, and he was shown the door. Now, you’re asking, why was this such a good thing? It’s About Perspective According to Alex, getting fired was a good thing because he gained a great deal of valuable perspective. He came to understand that he was expendable. His CEO had told him: “We need specialists instead of generalists,” and Alex saw how that made sense. He was good at many things, but “was I the best at any one of them? No.” That’s a tough pill to swallow, but next time, Alex plans on being a master in his job. It’s About Relationships Alex admits to being guilty of neglecting his friends for the sake of late nights at work. After being fired, he started calling around, and he was absolutely amazedâ€"and even humbledâ€"by how many people wanted to help him. They offered advice, made introductions, and just offered sympathy. As Alex says, “Jobs come from people. Not the internet. Not job boards. And if nothing else, whens the last time you grabbed a consolatory beer with a Craigslist post?” Next time around, he’ll probably make time for his relationships. It’s About Overcoming This was actually Alex’s second firing. The first time around, he started his own companyâ€"because he felt an overwhelming need to prove that the people who’d fired him were wrong. He wanted them to feel that they’d made a terrible mistake. Of course they didn’t react that way, but Alex felt, after every achievement, “like Reggie Miller raining 3s in Spike Lee’s weasel-y face.” Doesn’t that sound empowering? The point is, that as a result of his first firing, Alex learned that there was greener grass on the other side of the fence, and he knew he’d find it following his second firing. It’s not easy embracing being fired, at least not with the apparent delight it gave Alex Korchinski. This is probably one of the most amazing stories of making lemonade when life hands you lemonsâ€"and maintaining a positive outlookâ€"that I’ve ever heard. I hope it’s given you some inspiration if you’re dealing with having been fired.

Company Culture Matters More Than Some Experts Will Admit

Company Culture Matters More Than Some Experts Will Admit Last night a friend asked me for some advice. He was in a job interview for a sales role and, either after the interview or towards the end of the interview, the interviewer told him that his energy level was too low. This was shocking to my friend. He is an excellent salesman, and pretty much always exceeds any quotas. His question was: How do you respond to that? The first impression was already made you cant rewind. Plus, thats his personality. High energy doesnt always mean successful, even in sales.  And he has a track record that however he does it, he brings in the sales. I dont remember what my response was to him, last night. Right now, just writing this, my thoughts are counter the claim (of low energy) with stats and facts. Let your past accomplishments tell your story. Yep. Good answer.  But that just came to me. For most of the day Ive had a different thought: If the boss wants a high energy team, and you have a different style, then perhaps you arent a good cultural fit. Trust me as good as it might seem now, and as appealing it is to have that (or any) job, let this be a yellow flag that you look at and think Hm maybe the culture here is not going to work out. Years ago someone asked me about a huge career transition. He said that he didnt care what the job was, or where it was his main criteria was the amount of money they would pay. I should mention that this person, a Baby Boomer, has a level of loyalty that is awesome for employers. He ended up taking a job, for ten years, that was horrible. Yes, the pay was great until after the first year, and they somehow figured out how to reduce his salary by 33%. Remember the loyalty thing? Thats why he stayed.  The job got worse and worse. The culture fit couldnt have been more mismatched. This professional cared about people, building teams, empowering managers but the owner cared about revenue and profit. Ten years of cultural mismatch had an impact on him.  Hes out of the situation now, and hes a great guy, but I doubt he looks back at those ten years fondly. Some experts say that company culture is non-existent. To them I say, you have never worked at a company that had a strong, great culture. I have, and it was amazing to witness. Heres what I know: when you are looking for jobs, make sure you weigh cultural fit just as much as you weigh salary and commute and benefits. If you dont, you might be setting yourself up for an unhappy work environment one thats destined to point you in the direction of yet another job search. Give Dad Something He Really Wants

Give Dad Something He Really Wants Maybe Father’s Day is coming up, or your old man’s birthday is creeping up on the calendar. Whatever the occasion, you need something to give to your dad. Well, Scotch gifts for dad are a great idea because they never go out of style, they are widely accepted, and they stand the test of time. No matter what your own father’s personality is, the odds are that a bottle of liquor will be greatly appreciated. If you still need some convincing, here are some great reasons (and ideas!) for presenting Scotch to your old man. It is a Timeless and Traditional Gift Let’s face it, our dads can be a bit traditional and old-fashioned. Yet that doesn’t have to stand in the way of giving him a great present. Scotch gifts continue to be popular because they hold on to the classic care and appreciation that all fathers cherish. Moreover, these types of gifts will really play to a dad’s love for the finer things in life, and a glass of Scotch truly does represent the traditional view of the hard-working and dedicated father. Needless to say, everyone respects a man who enjoys a good glass of liquor. This option also eliminates a lot of the guesswork that can go into choosing the perfect present. And he can enjoy it for years to come, unlike flowers or candies. It is Personal, Yet Social Think about it, what other item can be heartfelt while still being social and shareable? Scotch gifts are great for all occasions because they show your old man that you care, but a bottle can also be passed around and shared with anyone else in attendance. Dad can keep the liquor in his own home, but it is something that he can offer to guests or friends and family as he pleases. Even at the actual event or party, he can crack open the bottle and really get things going! Furthermore, your father will truly appreciate and place value on such a gift because it speaks volumes to how you view him: as a dependable, trustworthy, intelligent, and refined man. It is Simple and Satisfying In all honesty, giving Scotch is a no-brainer because it is simple and easy to get, but it still keeps your recipient happy. We have all had that experience of receiving a gift that we either hated or had no use for. You wouldn’t want to do that to someone else, especially not your own father! On the other hand, liquor is something that just about everyone can enjoy, and it is simple enough to purchase at the last minute. Tie a fancy bow or ribbon around it or just stick it in a gift bag with some tissue paper, and you’re good to go! Really, what could be better? Image Source

7 Habits of Highly Productive Women - Classy Career Girl

7 Habits of Highly Productive Women I enjoy  getting organized and having something personalized to do it with is all the better.   A few months ago I received my May Designs notebook (photo below). Ive been using this notebook for some time now, on a daily basis to document my ideas, thoughts, and projects. As a Social Media and Brand Partnerships Manager it is important that I stay organized, which is something I always worry about when it comes to my planning systems.  I need a planning system that is not only functional but one that I can take with me when on the go ? and if it’s as beautiful as this one even better. What I love most about May Designs is that you can design your own  notebook. You can choose the cover design, add a monogram or name, and you choose which package of pages that you want. You can get plain notebook pages, a monthly planner, a monthly and weekly planner, graph paper, etc.  The choice is yours.  The pages I chose were the grid paper because I think it’s really versatile and I am not restricted to a particular format.   7 Habits of Highly Productive Women With so many daily demands, it is easy to feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish all that we need to do and lose control. Although we may know what’s really important, we still need a few practical suggestions to assist us in organizing our time more effectively. Especially, if you’re an entrepreneur.  Here are my tips and advice for staying productive and  organized: 1. Get a Head Start. Start by planning ahead. I typically plan on Saturday mornings. This allows me to have the rest of the weekend to spend with my family. Most importantly, though, it allows me to have my plans ready for the start of the workweek. 2. Write Things Down and Put It on Paper. Outlining your issues, tasks, ideas, and projects on paper is going to assist you in sorting it all out. Create a list of all possible solutions to accomplish those things. Identify the steps you need to take to accomplish each task. Get those thoughts out of your head and onto paper. I am using the bullet journal method. [RELATED: The Top 10 Processes You Need to Organize Your Life] 3. Schedule the Most Important Tasks First. If you take the time to accomplish your most critical tasks first, you’ll be able to complete those noncritical tasks with less pressure. You will then have additional time to complete those tasks that do not require top priority. 4. Track Your Time and Turn Off Distractions. Many times we can become easily distracted by unimportant tasks and we lose time and focus. We must turn off distractions and start tracking our time.  For example, schedule tasks with specific times such as social media for 1 hour on Mondays and Wednesday, housework on Tuesdays for 1 hour and emails for 30 mins daily, etc. If you track what you are doing each day of the week; you’ll be able to not only see where your time is going but also where your distractions are coming from. Then, you’ll be able to come up with solutions to get rid of those time-wasting tasks. Some solutions may be to block off parts of your day where you’ll have no distractions until you complete your tasks. I recommend turning off your phone if possible and turning off social media notifications and any other reminders that may cause you to lose focus. 5. Schedule Less. We can become overwhelmed, frustrated, and discouraged if we have too many things on our schedule.  You have to be realistic when it comes to your planning and what you schedule each day. You can’t have an appointment 12pm and then another at 1pm when it takes 45 mins to get there or a phone conference at 9am and another at 10am when it’s going to take you some time to gather your information. Be reasonable with yourself, know your limits. Remember, it takes baby steps. 6. Take Occasional Breaks. This may be one of the most important tips. Remember that after 45 minutes, our ability to focus  starts to taper off.  Take at least 10-15 minutes to stretch, get something to drink, take a quick walk; anything that can shift your focus for just a moment. Those 10-15 minutes can bring about new ideas and you’ll be better prepared to continue your tasks. 7. Sync All Calendars and Batch All Processes. As professionals or entrepreneurs, we may have multiple calendars. If you happen to have multiple calendars such as, on your computer, a daily planner, and on your phone, all of them must be synced and say the same thing. Be aware that having too many calendars can cause confusion and stress; too many to manage at one time. Try to stick with 1 or 2 that work the best and be sure they are synchronized.   How to Design Your May Book Interested in designing your our May Book just like I did? Here’s how to design your own book: Visit MayDesigns.com.   Select “notebooks” and begin selecting your elements. You’ll begin by selecting your print.   There are over 200 patterns to choose from.   Once you have chosen your cover pattern, you’ll be taken to a new page where you can customize the remaining parts of your notebook. You’ll be directed to customize your monogram if you choose to do so. If so, choose the text you would like on the cover, the background shape and the color you would like for it, and the font style and color. Then you’ll be directed to choose the layout of the inside pages.   There are six standard options, eight agenda options, eight lists options, and four specialty options (like an adult and kids’ coloring books and a calligraphy practice book, just for fun). You can also preview each one so you know what they look like. My favorites are the organizational options which include: 40 days of prayer gratitude, an address book, an agenda in quite a few different formats, an academic option, a menu planner, a health fitness planner, and a wedding planner. Not to mention a variety of basic options: lined pages, graph/grid pages, dot pages, black pages, and lined pages. How do you stay organized and productive? Share your tips in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Photo credit: MayDesigns.com

How to Spot a Top Sales Producer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Spot a Top Sales Producer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The question arose whether a Hiring Manager should select extroverted or introverted salespeople who interview. There isn’t a definitive answer to the question, because it’s the wrong question to be asked. There are far better indicators that will reveal the potential each candidate may bring to the company. Perspective Before any interview takes place, it is best for the Hiring Manager to recognize the interview itself is a sale. The Manager is the client and the candidate is the salesperson. Observation of candidate behaviors will provide great indication of how the person will perform if hired. Congeniality A smart candidate will greet everyone with a smile and friendly hello. The person will thank the Manager for taking the time to see them during the introduction, and will say something nice about the office. Leadership Qualities The better salespeople ask questions first before they ever begin speaking. A great conversation starter is to ask, “You must receive so many resumes, what caught your interest on mine to invite me in today?” This type of question indicates the candidate is willing to take the lead on sales calls and knows how to get to the direct path of conversation. Conducting conversations in this manner will eliminate many objections. It will be evident that the better applicant did much research ahead of the meeting as the conversation develops. This is an excellent indicator the applicant is a goal setter and high achiever leaving no stone unturned. Being an introvert or extrovert does not matter compared to whether listening followed by asking intelligent questions is the natural instinct of the candidate. In the QA conversation, another indicator is honesty. Does the applicant indicate the unknown and a need to know more? This is an essential quality that Hiring Managers should seek out. Story-Telling During the conversation, the sales applicant should be very comfortable sharing stories to find elements of commonality. The stories should be engaging, factual, and to the point of the questions asked. A great indicator of whether to hire the person is would you welcome a return conversation. Follow-Up Most salespeople do not follow-up with clientele. The person loses their nerve and makes excuses for not making one more call. This is a major reason that sales fail to materialize. Accordingly, review which applicant being considered actually asked for a return appointment prior to leaving the office. Did they send a thank you note after the fact and again indicate interest? All of this gives indication to the person motivated and goal driven. Closing Many salespeople are fearful of both negotiation and asking for business. Did the candidate indicate a desire to work at the company? Did they ask how training and the job will unfold should they be hired? Did they ask for next steps? When the salary was revealed, did the applicant automatically step out of their comfort zone to ask for more providing  a reasonable story behind the expectation? It’s evident from all of the above, that when the Hiring Manager treats the interview process as a sales call, indicators of the applicant’s sales capability will be very apparent as will their personal brand. Introvert or extrovert traits do not matter nearly as much. Just like negotiation of a meeting of the minds, the balanced ego and combination of extrovert-introvert will produce the salesperson better positioned to do well. In the end, all parties will encounter the Smooth Sale! (http://www.smoothsale.net/blog/)
